Homocysteine is a breakdown product of protein metabolism. In excessive concentrations, it can poison cells and cause dangerous deposits in the blood vessels (arteriosclerosis) as well as thrombosis. The B vitamins vitamin B6, B12 and folic acid promote the maintenance of a normal homocysteine balance.
