VITAMIN D3 2,400 IU capsules 120 pieces

Vitamin D , also called cholecalciferol, belongs to the group of fat-soluble vitamins. It occupies a special position among vitamins because it can be produced in the skin from 7-dehydrocholesterol under the influence of sunlight (UV-B rays). The pro-vitamin 7-dehydrocholesterol comes from the liver, where it is produced from cholesterol. Healthy kidneys are essential for the vitamin to be sufficiently effective, because this is where vitamin D is converted into its active form (calcitriol).

Despite self-synthesis, an inadequate supply can still occur. On the one hand, the storage capacity in the body (especially in the liver) is limited and on the other hand, the sunlight on the skin can be insufficient. Especially in winter, the time we spend outdoors is often too short to enable sufficient self-synthesis. Another factor that leads to reduced self-synthesis is sunscreen. Although these offer sensible protection against radiation damage, they also block the UV-B rays that are needed for sufficient synthesis of vitamin D. Even an SPF (sun protection factor) of over 8 leads to a complete blockage of synthesis in the skin.

The intake of vitamin D through food accounts for only a small part, 10-20%. Vitamin D is mainly found in animal foods, especially in offal. Plant foods generally only contain very small amounts, the highest amounts being found in avocados and mushrooms.

The physiological effect on our body is not just limited to the maintenance of bones and our calcium levels, as has long been known. Rather, vitamin D is involved in a number of regulatory mechanisms.

The binding of activated vitamin D (calcitriol) regulates transcription factors that control no less than 3% of the genes in the human genome via this pathway. This mechanism contributes to the formation of certain proteins, enzymes, cell development and hormones.

This explains the diverse effects that vitamin D has on our body, which it supports in a variety of tasks.
