Common valerian (Valeriana officinalis) belongs to the valerian family (Valerianaceae). In addition to the essential oil, which is responsible for the characteristic odor of the rhizome, valerian contains valepotriates and alkaloids. Valerian is said to have a positive effect on the nervous system, as well as being a calming and sleep aid. It is also attributed with strengthening properties.
