Tansy (Tanacetum vulgare), a member of the Asteraceae family, is a perennial herb traditionally recognized for its medicinal, agricultural, and insect-repellent properties, largely due to its high concentration of volatile oils, including \(\beta \)-thujone.

Important Safety Note: Tansy is considered toxic if ingested in large quantities and can cause serious side effects, including seizures, liver damage, and kidney damage. It is generally recommended for external use only.

Top Benefits and UsesInsect Repellent:

Tansy is highly effective at repelling ants, flies, fleas, moths, mosquitoes, and ticks. Historically used as a "strewing herb," dried bunches can be hung in doorways and windows to deter insects.

Antimicrobial Activity: In vitro studies show that tansy extracts possess antibacterial and antifungal properties, particularly against Gram-positive bacteria and fungi like Candida albicans.

Garden Protection: It is a valuable companion plant, often used to repel the Colorado potato beetle, aphids, and squash bugs.

Dye Plant: The yellow flowers are used to create a strong, clear yellow dye for wool and other textiles.

Traditional Medicinal Uses (Require Extreme Caution)Intestinal Parasites: Historically, small amounts were used as an anthelmintic (worming) agent, particularly to treat roundworms and threadworms.

Digestive Aid: It was sometimes used in tiny, diluted doses to stimulate digestion and treat flatulence, as the bitter compounds can ease dyspepsia.
