PANGROL 20,000 digestive substances (enzymes) gastro-resistant tablets, 200 tablets

  • This preparation is a medicine containing digestive substances (enzymes) from the pancreas of pigs (pancreatic powder, also called pancreatin).
  • It is used to treat digestive disorders caused by reduced or absent pancreatic function.

How does the active ingredient in the medication work?

The medication consists of digestive enzymes derived from the pancreas of pigs. These are very similar to the naturally occurring digestive enzymes in the human gastrointestinal tract and, after ingestion, mix with the food pulp in the stomach and intestines. There, they help break down food by splitting fats, proteins, and carbohydrates into smaller units. In this way, the digestion of food is supported. These smaller units are then absorbed into the blood or lymph and distributed via these transport routes to the cells of the individual tissues.

  • Swallow the medicine whole with plenty of liquid, preferably in the middle of a meal.
  • Please ensure that the tablets are swallowed whole, as chewing reduces the effectiveness of the medication and the enzymes they contain can damage the mucous membranes when released in the mouth. You should drink plenty of fluids (water or juice) afterwards.
  • Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor has told you. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.
  • dosage
    • The recommended dose is:
      • 1-2 tablets per meal (corresponding to 20,000 to 40,000 Ph. Eur. units of lipase per meal).
      • The dosage depends on the severity of the digestive disorder; therefore, the required dose may be higher. Increasing the dose should only be done under medical supervision and should be guided by the improvement of symptoms (e.g., fatty stools, abdominal pain). A daily enzyme dose of 15,000 to 20,000 units of lipase per kilogram of body weight should not be exceeded.
      • Especially in patients with cystic fibrosis, the enzyme dose should not be higher than necessary for adequate fat intake.
      • The doctor should decide on the dosage for children.

  • Duration of application
    • There is no limit to the duration of use. It depends on the course of the illness and is determined by the doctor. If you do not feel better or even feel worse, consult your doctor.
    • Please talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you feel that the effect of the medicine is too strong or too weak.

  • If you have taken a larger amount than you should
    • Drink plenty of water afterwards and talk to your doctor or pharmacist.
    • Repeated high doses of pancreatic powder can cause scarring or thickening of the intestinal wall, which can lead to intestinal obstruction, a condition called fibrosing colonopathy.
    • Extremely high doses of pancreatic powder can lead to an increase in uric acid in the blood (hyperuricemia) and urine (hyperuricosuria), especially in patients with cystic fibrosis.

  • If you forgot to take it
    • Do not take a double dose if you have forgotten to take the previous dose, but please continue with the treatment as recommended.

  • If you stop taking
    • If you prematurely end or interrupt your treatment, you must expect your symptoms to return. Consult your doctor.

  • If you have any further questions about the use of this medicine, please ask your doctor or pharmacist.
