What are enzymes?
Enzymes are highly specialized catalysts that facilitate and accelerate biochemical reactions in our bodies. Therefore, they are also called biocatalysts.

Enzymes perform a wide variety of tasks in our metabolism and digestion. Everything is precisely organized. Each enzyme has its own specific function. Some transform substances, while others break down, for example, food components.

The function of an enzyme can often be recognized from its name:

• Amylases break down complex carbohydrates. In our bodies, amylases are found, among other places, in saliva and in the secretions of the pancreas.
• Proteases break down proteins.
• Lipases break down fats (lipids).
• Lactase breaks down milk sugar (lactose).

For other enzymes, the name indicates their location. For example, we find bromelain in the bromeliad pineapple and papain in papaya.
