What are molluscum contagiosum viruses?
Molluscum contagiosum is a viral infection caused by the molluscum contagiosum virus, a member of the poxvirus family, which can infect humans as well as other primates. This virus causes the appearance of translucent, pinhead-like nodules with a dent in the center. It is a very common infection in children and can affect any part of the body. There is a second peak in adults due to sexual transmission.
How is it transmitted?
Infection occurs through direct skin-to-skin contact with an affected person or through objects. Transmission from mother to fetus is also possible. Molluscum contagiosum is a common viral infection that is widespread worldwide and primarily affects children between the ages of 2 and 10. The incidence is 5-8% in industrialized countries and 20% in countries with warm climates and lower socioeconomic and hygiene standards. There is no gender difference, while 62% of affected children have a history of eczema.
How does a molluscum contagiosum infection occur?
After an incubation period of 15 days to 6 months, translucent skin nodules with a central indentation of varying sizes (from 1-2 mm to 10 mm in diameter) often appear in multiple cases. Any skin site can be affected, but they are more common on the face and in skin folds, as well as on exposed skin in general. The individual nodules usually grow over 6-12 weeks and then stabilize. The appearance of new nodules often leads to repeated infection, which can last longer.
Can the infection cause local or general complications?
In 30% of cases, eczema in the area of the warts, known as "eczema molluscatum," can occur, a phenomenon that is more common in people with atopic dermatitis. Complications are generally not possible.
Can molluscum contagiosum cause other diseases?
No.
How do I diagnose molluscum contagiosum?
The diagnosis of molluscum contagiosum is generally clinical, meaning it is made by simply observing the affected skin by dermatologists or pediatricians. It is relatively easy to diagnose if multiple translucent nodules with a central dent are identified.
How are molluscum contagiosum treated?
There are numerous treatments for removing molluscum contagiosum, but in infants, it's recommended to simply wait until the contagious lesions clear up on their own. Treatment is generally necessary to prevent the infection from spreading from one person to another.
Indications:
Evolsin® Molluscum Contagiosum Remedy is indicated for the topical treatment of molluscum contagiosum. Based on a 5% potassium hydroxide solution (caustic potassium chloride), the product works by dissolving cells infected with the molluscum contagiosum virus and generating an inflammatory reaction, after which the virus disappears. Before treatment with Evolsin® Molluscum Contagiosum Remedy, a prior diagnosis confirming the presence of molluscum contagiosum virus infection must always be performed.
Method of application:
Apply morning and evening using the spatula applicator exclusively to the wart nodules and allow to dry thoroughly to prevent the product from penetrating the surrounding healthy skin. Ensure that the product is applied to all nodules present. After treating 3-5 nodules, immerse the spatula back into the bottle of solution.
In particular, the following should be noted:
- Always keep the bottle upright
- Remove excess solution from the spatula by wiping it on the inside of the bottle opening if necessary
- Do not use within 4 weeks of opening
SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS:
This medical device contains a potentially corrosive alkaline agent (caustic potash), therefore contact with eyes, mucous membranes, wounds and damaged skin must be carefully avoided.
- If the product comes into contact with the eyes or unaffected skin, rinse immediately. Rinse with plenty of running water for at least 15 minutes and consult a doctor.
- Keep product out of reach of children
- Avoid crushing or scratching the treated nodules until they are completely healed to prevent scarring
- Discontinue use once the inflammatory reaction lasts for at least 12 hours; this indicates that the warts have healed
- If there is no improvement within 2 weeks of starting treatment, please consult a doctor
- If accidentally swallowed, please consult a doctor
- The product must not be used after the expiry date
Contraindications - Do not use:
- On healthy skin
- In the eye area and on mucous membranes
- On the breast during breastfeeding
- On broken skin and wounds
- On already inflamed warts
- For infants and children under 2 years of age, unless specifically instructed by a doctor
- In diseases related to the immune system
- In patients with acute atopic eczema
