The name comfrey originates from Old High German and indicates its use. ###Leg### refers to bones of any kind. ###Well### describes the healing of plant wounds and, more broadly, the fusion of bones. External applications include bruises, sprains, and strains. Preparations made primarily from the root, but also from the herb, are used.
