How does the active ingredient in this medicine work?
The ingredients are derived from the ribwort plantain plant and act as a natural mixture. Regarding the plant itself:
- Appearance: A herbaceous plant whose leaves are arranged in a rosette at the base, with a 10-50 cm long stem emerging from the center and a small spike.
- Distribution: Worldwide, in rather cool-temperate zones
- Main constituents: Mucilage, aucubin (bitter substance), tannins
- Plant parts used and preparations: Extracts, tinctures, syrup, and pressed juice from leaves, flowers, stems, and herb.
Both internally and externally, ribwort plantain has a soothing, astringent, and germicidal effect, which is due, among other things, to the tannins and bitter substances. Ribwort plantain is also expectorant and has an antispasmodic effect on the bronchi. The mucilage forms a protective layer on the mucous membranes of the respiratory tract, thus warding off irritants and inhibiting the tickly cough locally.
