Potential propolis benefits may include helping heal minor wounds, promoting oral hygiene, aiding inflammation, and treating cold sores. Propolis is a resin that bees create. It contains a mixture of bee saliva, beeswax, and substances from plants and trees.
Due to its antimicrobial properties, taking propolis orally every day can help to reduce canker sores and prevent new ones from appearing. Propolis may also be effective in treating gingivitis and its associated symptoms, as well as bad breath when used as a gel or mouth gargle.
Studies on propolis collected from many trees and plants, such as poplar, oak, beech, acacia, eucalyptus, and conifer trees, have shown numerous benefits. Propolis's antimicrobial, antiviral, and antibacterial effects help prevent the formation of disease-causing microorganisms.
Propolis is a honey-related product with reported health benefits such as improved immunity, lowered blood pressure, treated allergies and skin conditions. A literature review and narrative synthesis were conducted to investigate the evidence on the reported health benefits and future direction of propolis products.
Research suggests that some of the anti-oxidative effects of propolis may have potential cardiovascular, neurological, and anti-diabetic benefits. According to one 2019 review, polyphenol-rich foods and supplements like propolis may reduce the risk of high cholesterol, heart disease, and stroke.
When is the best time to take propolis? Propolis consumption time is not strictly regulated. Considering digestion and absorption of active ingredients, an empty stomack is recommended. It is best to take it 20-30 minutes before meals to improve absorption.
Some of the substances present in propolis may also have anticancer properties. However, although laboratory and animal studies into the properties of propolis and its components are promising, few high quality studies have proven its effectiveness as a treatment for specific conditions in humans.
