Axis bovis, in the context of Chinese traditional medicine, refers to Calculus bovis, which is the dried gallstone of cattle. It has been used for over two millennia in China to treat a variety of ailments, including those related to the heart, liver, and brain.
Here's a more detailed look at its uses:
Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular:
Axis bovis is a component of many traditional Chinese remedies used to treat heart and liver disorders, including stroke, high fever, and convulsion.
Phlegm and Dizziness:
It's believed to help clear phlegm, reduce dizziness, and alleviate phlegm-related confusion.
Fever and Convulsions:
Axis bovis is also used to treat fever and convulsions, particularly those associated with heat.
Other Traditional Uses:
In traditional Chinese medicine, it's considered to have cooling and sweet properties and is linked to the heart and liver meridians.
Scientific Research:
While Axis bovis has a long history in traditional medicine, there is also research exploring its potential benefits. For example, studies have found that its extract can protect against arrhythmias in cultured heart cells and may have a protective effect related to taurine.
Important Considerations:
Traditional Medicine:
Axis bovis is a traditional remedy and should not be considered a substitute for modern medical treatment.
Consult a Professional:
If you are considering using Axis bovis for any condition, it is essential to consult with a qualified healthcare professional or a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner.
