Aquacel Ag+ Extra wound dressings are designed for use as a primary dressing. They are intended for use under the guidance of a healthcare professional on wounds at risk of infection or with signs of infection or where biofilm is suspected, and according to the indications.

Indications:

  • Aquacel Ag+ Extra is suitable for the treatment of acute and chronic, moderately to heavily exuding wounds that contain biofilm, are infected or at risk of infection, particularly for:
  • Diabetic foot ulcers
  • Venous leg ulcer
  • arterial leg ulcer
  • Mixed leg ulcer
  • decubitus

Precautions and observations:

  • This dressing is not intended for use as a surgical sponge.
  • Sterility is only guaranteed if the bag remains undamaged and has not been opened before use.
  • Do not use the product if the packaging has been damaged or opened prior to use. In this case, the product must be disposed of in accordance with local regulations.
  • Aquacel Ag+ Extra dressings are disposable and must not be reused.
  • Reuse may result in an increased risk of infection, cross-contamination, and delayed healing.
  • These dressings should not be used with any other wound care products without first consulting a healthcare professional.
  • Aquacel Ag+ Extra dressings are not compatible with petroleum-based products.
  • Due to the sterilization process, a faint/light odor may occur when opening the primary packaging.
  • During the body's normal healing process, dead tissue is removed from the wound (autolytic debridement), which may initially make the wound appear larger.
  • Newly formed blood vessels may occasionally produce bloody wound fluid after the dressing is removed.
  • Aquacel Ag+ Extra dressings are designed to be MRI compatible.
  • Skin discoloration has been observed after long-term use of silver-containing products, but this is often temporary and resolves after discontinuation of the silver-containing dressing.
  • Physicians/medical professionals should note that there are very limited data on the prolonged and repeated use of silver-containing products, particularly in children and newborns.
  • If you notice irritation (redness, inflammation), maceration (softening of the skin with white discoloration), hypergranulation (excessive tissue growth), or signs of infection (increasing pain, bleeding, warmth/redness of the surrounding tissue, wound exudate) or a change in wound color and/or odor when changing the dressing, please consult a medical professional.
  • This product may pose a biohazard after use.
  • It must be handled and disposed of in accordance with generally accepted medical practice and applicable local, state, and federal laws.
  • If a serious incident occurs during or as a result of the use of this product, please report it to the manufacturer and the competent authority in the Member State where the user and/or patient is established.

Associated products and therapies:
Aquacel Ag+ Extra dressings can be used on their own or in conjunction with other wound care products such as primary dressings, secondary dressings, securement dressings, compression therapy products or topical drug treatments. Additional products and therapies should be used under the guidance of a healthcare professional.

Contact and duration of use:
Aquacel Ag+ Extra dressings can be worn for up to 7 days. Dressing changes must be made sooner if clinically indicated. For second degree burns, the dressing can be left in place for up to 14 days. The need for continued use of Aquacel Ag+ Extra dressings should be reassessed after 14 days and alternative wound care considered if necessary.

Instructions for use:
Before applying the dressing, cleanse the wound with an appropriate wound cleanser.
The Aquacel Ag+ Extra dressing should overlap the skin around the wound by at least 1 cm.
When using Aquacel Ag+ Extra dressings in deep wounds, only fill the wound to 80%, as Aquacel Ag+ Extra dressings expand upon contact with wound fluid and fill the wound space.

A secondary dressing is required to keep Aquacel Ag+ Extra dressings in place, for example:
A moisture-retaining top dressing (e.g., DuoDERM Extra Thin) for lightly to moderately exuding wounds.
A secondary top dressing such as Aquacel Foam, Aquacel Foam Pro, or ConvaMax for moderately to heavily exuding wounds.
For dry wounds, see the section on dry wounds below.
For full instructions for use, please refer to the package insert for the respective top dressing.
All wounds should be examined regularly.
Aquacel Ag+ Extra dressings should be changed when clinically indicated (e.g., leakage, excessive bleeding, increasing pain) or after a maximum of seven days.

For partial (second-degree) burns:

  • Before applying the dressing, clean the wound area with a suitable wound cleanser.
  • The Aquacel Ag+ Extra dressing should overlap the skin around the burn or other adjacent Aquacel Ag+ Extra dressings by at least 5 cm
  • Aquacel Ag+ Extra dressings should be covered with a sterile absorbent pad and secured with an adhesive plaster or a fixation bandage.
  • Remove the overdressing regularly and check the Aquacel Ag+ Extra dressings remaining on the burn.
  • For this indication, the adhesion of Aquacel Ag+ Extra dressings to the wound bed is a desirable property.
  • As the burn wound progresses towards re-epithelialization, the Aquacel Ag+ Extra dressings dissolve or can be easily removed.
  • For second-degree burns, Aquacel Ag+ Extra dressings can be left on the wound for up to 14 days or as clinically indicated.
  • If the burn is infected, it may be necessary to examine the wound regularly.

On dry wounds:
Pre-moisten Aquacel Ag+ Extra dressings with sterile saline solution before applying them to the wound.
The gelling properties of Aquacel Ag+ Extra dressings help maintain a moist wound and reduce the risk of maceration.
Cover the dressing with a moisture-retaining overdressing (e.g., DuoDERM Extra Thin) to prevent the dressing from drying out and subsequently adhering to the wound.
If the dressing is dry upon removal, it must be moistened with sterile saline solution before removal to reduce the risk of trauma.

Store at room temperature (10°C - 25°C/50°F - 77°F). Keep dry.
