  • Always take this medicine exactly as described here or as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.
  • Unless otherwise prescribed by the doctor, the recommended dose is
    • In general, 1-2 film-coated tablets 3 times a day are sufficient. In order to achieve rapid urinary acidification, it makes sense to start the therapy with 2 film-coated tablets 3 times a day.
    • In special cases and on doctor's orders, higher doses can be taken by patients who are not at risk of acidosis.
  • A pH value of the urine of less than pH 6 is therapeutically aimed at. It must be taken into account that the effect can only occur after 5 - 6 days.

    • There are no adequate studies on use in children.
    • The drug should therefore not be used in children under 12 years of age.

side effects

  • Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
  • In patients at risk of acidosis, shifts in the blood pH value into the acidic range are possible.
  • Taking the drug can cause vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, drowsiness, and irritability.
  • If you get any side effects, talk to your doctor or pharmacist. This also applies to side effects that are not specified.

methionine interactions

  • Taking with other medicines
    • Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking/using, have recently taken/used or might take/use any other medicines.
    • With the simultaneous administration of active substances (e.g. ampicillin, carbenicillin, sulfonamides, nitrofurantoin and nalidixic acid), which are reabsorbed to a greater extent due to the acidification of the urine in the kidneys, the effect can be increased by prolonging the plasma half-life.
    • Concomitant administration of levodopa and methionine can lead to a worsening of the effectiveness of levodopa in patients with Parkinson's disease. Increased dosage of methionine should be avoided in these patients.

Contraindications

  • The drug must not be taken
    • if you are allergic to methionine or any of the other ingredients of this medicine
    • in homocysteinuria (congenital metabolic disease)
    • for uric acid and cystine stones (metabolic products)
    • in case of renal insufficiency (limited renal function)
    • in oxalosis (increased deposition of calcium oxalate crystals in kidney tissues and/or other organs)
    • with methionine adenosyltransferase deficiency (metabolic disease)
    • in metabolic (e.g. renal tubular) acidosis (blood acidification)
    • in infants.

pregnancy and breast feeding period

  • If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.
  • There are insufficient data on the use of methionine during pregnancy and lactation. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should only take the medicine after a careful benefit-risk assessment by their doctor.

patient methionine, ACIMETHIN, urinary tract infections, urinary acidifiers notes

  • Warnings and Precautions
    • Please talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking this medicine.
    • Because of the risk of synthesis of neurotoxic mercaptans in bacterial metabolism, patients with liver dysfunction or hepatogenic encephalopathy (brain changes caused by liver disease) should not take methionine.
    • What precautions should be taken?
      • If there is a deficiency in folic acid, vitamin B2, B6 and/or B12, treatment with methionine can lead to an increase in the homocysteine level. An increased occurrence of homocysteine in the blood can be regarded as an independent risk factor for the changes in the wall of the blood vessels that lead to "calcification". With long-term use of the drug, it is therefore important to ensure an adequate supply of folic acid and B vitamins through the diet supplementary income.
      • The homocysteine plasma level can be increased under a hypothyroid metabolic situation (underactive thyroid gland). Thyroid function should therefore be checked prior to treatment with methionine.
      • Exposure to methionine can lead to increased excretion of calcium in the urine (hypercalcuria). In the case of long-term treatment, regular monitoring of the mineral balance is therefore important.
      • In patients at risk of acidosis, long-term treatment with the drug should be carried out with regular monitoring of the acid-base balance in the blood.

For medicines: Read the leaflet on the risks and side effects and ask your doctor or pharmacist.
