After cleaning the injection site (e.g., by wiping with 70% alcohol), pinch up a fold of skin and insert the needle at an angle. Gently pull back the plunger. If blood appears, a blood vessel has been hit. In this case, repeat the injection at a different site. If no blood appears, inject slowly, then withdraw the needle and briefly press a cotton swab onto the injection site.
